      Obituary
Published in Green Bay Press-Gazette on, Gittens, John Patrick
On April 26, 2016, John Patrick Gittens went to be with his Lord in Heaven. While on earth, John led a very interesting life, and made many friends. John was born 9/5/1921, and grew up on Clay Street in the Astor Park neighborhood where he attended the Cathedral, and went on to graduate from East High School.
John was very proud of his service to his country aboard ship during WWII from 1942 to 1946. John served 3 ½ years for the United States Coast Guard Naval Service. He served in the Asiatic Pacific Campaign, as well as the European Front. John was awarded several victory medals. Upon returning home, he worked for Wisconsin Bell for 40 years as a lineman, and then later in the office, from which he ultimately retired. He was a member of the American Legion Post 0089 in Minocqua and the Telephone Pioneers of America.
John and his wife Joyce (Nick), who was the love of his life, spent their retirement years in the best of both worlds. In the summer they enjoyed their home in
Arbor Vitae, WI, and in winter they would head for Alamo Rose, Texas. One of his greatest joys was 'reading'. He could carry on a conversation, and was quite knowledgeable on many subjects - from politics to sports to religion, and he was always proud of his Catholic faith. It goes without mention, he enjoyed the Green Bay Packers, and followed them closely.
John was a 'Proud Irish Gentleman', and is survived by many loving nieces and nephews and their families, who enjoyed spending time with him and hearing his wonderful stories about 'life in the early days', his 'Irish heritage', and the 'Astor Park Hoods' (of which he was proud to be a member). But most of all, John was a kind soul, who had a positive word to say about everyone he met.
He would like to thank all the staff at Bishop's Court Assisted Living, where he resided for the past several years, for their excellent care, and in the final days, the group from Unity Hospice. He was very thankful for his niece, Kathy, and his good friend, Tom, for looking out for him these past few years. A special thanks to his nephews and nieces and their families, especially the "Nick brothers", who visited him often, and his friends from the Minocqua area, Al, Ginny, and Paulette for all the cards and letters. John is also survived by his brother, Joseph, of Naperville, IL, and his grand-daughter, Melissa (Ron) Charbonneau and his 3 great-grandchildren, Max, Myla, and Maverick.
John was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Joyce, his son, Patrick, his brothers, Michael, Denis, James, and Lawrence, as well as one sister, Mary Pecore, and his many cherished 'in-laws".
Visitation will be held from 10:00 am until 11:00 am on Friday, April 29, 2016 at St. Elizabeth Ann Seton Catholic Church, 2771 Oakwood Drive, Green Bay. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 11:00 am on Friday at the church with Rev. Paul Demuth officiating. Entombment will be at Fort Howard Mausoleum.
