- Isabella Gittens and her two surviving sons Julian age 5 and Clifford age 3 travelled aboard the Steamship Trinidad from Barbados arriving in New York on 24 October 1885. Travelling with them was Ann Hardy a family servant age 26.
It seems fairly certain that the family was joining their father Edwin Thomas George Gittens who had already arrived in New York on 1 Sep 1885.

- Isabella died on the 28th of July 1887 as a result of Septicemia following a Right Breast Abscess. It seems that she had an abscess drained and got what is called "blood poisoning" the layman's word for septicemia - which in those days was fatal because of lack of adequate medication - so it was a consequence of childbirth. [Information supplied by Florence Gittens, who is a trained nurse, after I sent her a copy of the death certificate.]
Family Lore recounts that Isabella's death followed the birth of her youngest son, Edwin "Teddy" Johnson Gittens.
