Notes - There is no direct evidence, such as a baptism document, proving that this Elizabeth is the daughter of Benjamin Gittens and Mercy Ann Gooding. There is however sufficient indirect or circumstantial evidence to support the assumption, at least for the time being.
In Benjamin's will dated May 7, 1870 he lists one of his daughters as Elizabeth Braithwaite, the assumption is that Elizabeth's married name is Braithwaite. There is a record of a baptism for Inez Beata Brathwaite in Barbados dated 18 Sep 1869, the parents are listed as James Brathwaite and Elizabeth Gittens. Working backwards in time the birth year of Elizabeth would be about 1848 which fits perfectly in the time that Benjamin Gittens and Mercy Ann Gooding where having children.
As Elizabeth is listed first in her father's will the assumption is that she would be the eldest child, therefore her birth year is estimated as 1845.
