    • (Research):On 25 June 1874, Joseph Massiah Gittens married Anna Florence Weeks. They subsequently had 8 children between 1874 and 1891. Some of these children immigrated to the USA. Some of the children were listed as "white" on their immigration papers and others were listed as "black". My assumption is that their father Joseph Massiah Gittens and or their mother were of mixed race.

      On the marriage documentation Joseph Massiah's father is listed as John H. Gittens. It may very well be that John H Gittens is one of my John Hamlet Giitens included in my database.

      What confuses things is that there was a Joseph Messias Gittens baptised 11 Aug 1855, in Saint Phillip. The parents are listed as Frederic Gittens and Rebecca Holder.

      Are these two Joseph Massiah Gittens the same person? I could not find any information on Frederic Gittens.

      I am assuming that these two individuals are two different people as they have different parents attached to them.

      Thank you for your inquiry. I do have some information regarding the
      family noted in your email.

      Although my research has identified the parents of Joseph Massiah
      Gittens who married Anna Florence Weekes on 25 June 1874 in Saint
      John, Barbados, as John H. Gittens. This information comes from the
      marriage record of Joseph Gittens and Anna Weekes. There does not
      appear to be an existing baptism record for Joseph Massiah Gittens.

      It is suspected that John H. Gittens is John Hamlet Gittens, one of a
      line of people with that name. This family line goes back to the mid
      1600's in Barbados.

      DNA evidence has confirmed that Joseph Massiah Gittens is definitely
      related to the Barbados Gittens line that I have been researching.

      Some of the confusion surrounding this family line results from the
      baptism record of Joseph Messias Gittens, baptised on 11 Aug 1855 in
      Saint Philips, Barbados. His parents were Frederick or Frederic
      Gittens and Rebecca Holder, Rebecca Holder Bruce. No further
      information on this family could be found in the Barbados records on
      line. The assumption made at this point is that Joseph Messias
      Gittens and Joseph Massiah Gittens are two different, unrelated
      people.
