This is an enquiry email via http://www.gittensfamily.ca/ from:
      Sandra Belbeck

Hello Cliff, I was born Sandra Morton-Gittens in Trinidad I now live in London, Ontario. My father was Rudolph Morton-Gittens. I know I originate from the Gittens line of Barbados, my grandfather was Frederick (Fredrick?) of Barbados. I don't know where the "Morton" came from I expect it is a middle name or spouse's surname that was attached to Gittens at some point. An help or information would be so appreciated, thanks

      Dear Sandra,

I do apologize for the lengthily delay in responding to your e-mail of Sept 26 asking if I had any information on your family. Over the last couple of days I have done a bit of research on the Morton-Gittens surname as the first time I became aware of the surname was in your e-mail.

Attached is a report which includes what I found. I do caution you that the information is UNSOURCED and there is no verification of its reliability.

Further, your father, Rudolph's parents would have been aged 46 and 44 at the time of his birth which is on the verge of credibility. What it sort of indicates is that possibly either or both of his parents may have been married previously and bought children into the relationship. This of course is only a theory.

The only instance of the hyphenated Morton-Gittens that I could find was the death record of your father. This sort of indicates that the joining of the names was a fairly modern thing that may have started with your father, or possibly your grandfather.

I couldn't find any records for a Frederick Morton Gittens in my Barbados research which is fairly complete. Interestingly though, I did find a record for a Frederick Mortimer Gittens who was baptized on February 21, 1877 in Barbados. His mother was Ann Bell Gittens. No father was listed which was not at all unusual during this era in Barbados. Unfortunately I have no further information on Frederick Mortimer Gittens. Possibly he and his family immigrated to Trinidad and that's the reason there are no further records of him in Barbados, this however is just a hypothesis, there is no credible evidence.

After you have had a chance to review the attached possible you could advise if any of it makes sense to you, possibly as a result of any verbal family history or family lore that you may have gathered from your family.

      Regards

      Cliff Gittens
