John and Rachael had a son, John, who, is the father of Joseph and his sister and brthers. The Will of Joseph Gittens is recorded in the Barbados Archives as RB6/23/263. Joseph Gittens of the parish of St. Philip. Item. …Debts to be paid. Item. …unto my niece Margaret Hannah Wheeler ..five pounds current money Item. …to my loving sisters Mary Gittens and Hannah Gittens all the rest and residue of my estate… Item. I appoint my loving sisters Mary Gittens and Hannah Gittens and my kinsman John Archer as Executors… Witnesses: Jno. G. Eastwood, Thomas Tubbs,Margaret Gittens. Given at Pilgrim, 7 April 1780. COMMENT : One of the Executors to his Will was John Archer, whom he described as being his kinsman; during the 1700s this term often was used to refer to first cousins. .This provides a clue as to who his parents were. John Archer was the son of Peter Archer and Jane Gittens. This Jane Gittens was the daughter of John Gittens Jr and Rachael Ponn. John Gittens Jr. made his Will in 1742. In it he mentions his daughter Jane Archer and his three sons, Matthew, John and Joseph. Of these, I only have some info. on Matthew, who seems not to have been the father of this Joseph Gittens. This leaves John and Joseph, of whom nothing is known. I have guessed that John was Joseph's father , on the flimsiest of evidence : Catherine Gittens, the sister of Joseph, named one of her children John Gittens Wheeler. | |
