    Hi Jim,
I had a look at my standard sources for doing my Barbados family research looking for a baptism record of William Gittens Between 1870 and 1890. I did find three records but none of them indicated a father named James Gittens. So no luck in finding any information regarding the birth/baptism of William Gittens.
I did find a record of the Marriage of William Gittens to Eliz Simpson on the Ancestry.com site, but there was no detail provided, as I am sure you are aware. The only suggestion I can give is that you obtain a copy of William's marriage certificate, But I assume this might have already been done.
Looks like you might have a real challenge in tracing back the Gittens family line in this instance.
Would you be in contact with any male direct line children of William Gittens? If so, there might be some possibility of using DNA to trace back the ancestral line. It is a long shot and may not bare fruit in the shorter term. Plus, its expensive to do the testing.
    Good Luck,
    Cliff Gittens

William was born in Barbados about 1877 and died in New Zealand 1920. He was married in England to Eliza Mary Ann Simpson Jan 1904 and was settled in New Zealand by 1910. The only confirmed family information I have is his father's name was James and he had a plantation in Barbados. I am given to believe his father was English and his mother from slavery.

    Hi Jim,
The family history information that you have is a bit sparse. Would you know the name of your grandmother? Was your grandmother born in Barbados? I am assuming that all of your grandfather's children were born in New Zealand?
I will see what I can find on line but without more info it will be difficult.
    Regards
